A Larger Community

Updated: Jul 14, 2021

This is a membership Morsel from “Too Young to Retire”. Today, we are continuing to talk about Community and what constitutes it.

There are many communities you can participate in once you retire and are no longer tied to a 9 to 5 job. One such community exists in a place called the Chautauqua Institute on Chautauqua Lake. It exists only for nine weeks from the end of June to the end of August.

They have an Orchestra, Opera, Theater, Visual Arts, Literary Arts, and 2 Art Galleries. There special studies programs for anything you desire to learn and the costs very pocket friendly.

Now, for cost, you may think I am retired, and I cannot afford a princely sum to be away from home. That is not the case. You can stay at any of several denominational houses, some which include room and board for under $900 per week. You can also rent local apartments and cottages if you want your own place.

They also have a golf course which you can buy a weekly pass for about $100 and you can walk to it, since it is across the street, and offers you a choice of two courses. It’s a great community that you can immerse yourself in and really branch out and expand your horizons.

I have taken courses taught by retirees on writing, genealogy, and cooking. They all get a fee for teaching a class. If you are a writer and win a scholarship for a week you would get free room at Alumni Hall which has been the writing center of the Institute.

Do you have something like this that you can now participate in? I bet there are camps, resorts, and other retiree friendly places that you can enjoy during the summer. Look around or ask your friends for their approaches to enjoying a summer on a limited income. There are so many ways to choose you should never run out of options.
