Applying for a Job

Updated: Jul 14, 2021

This is a membership Morsel from “Too Young to Retire”. Today, we are continuing to

talk about work and how the old ways of doing things has changed. And I mean changed.

You no longer get the Sunday paper and peruse through the listing of who is looking for employees. Then you would send them a copy of your resume with a cover letter. A week later you would get a letter with a request that you call them to set up an interview.

When you went in for an interview you planned on it taking all day. You would first meet with the personal department, I believe it’s now called the Human resources department, then on to your first interview. You would be walked to each person afterward talking to three or more people. Then told a letter would be sent afterward. This would arrive about 3 days later and either offer you a job or say sorry you didn't meet what they wanted.

Today, that has all changed. There is a dozen or more than online services offering jobs. Almost all of them require that you give them an email or cell phone so they can text. They will then text you about a phone interview.

If you are lucky, they may move into a zoom call for the next couple of rounds of interviews that are spread over several days. If you are late on signing into the zoom you may find they are no longer interested in you. Your rejection, if it comes, will be in the form of an email.

You will never see their offices or what type of operation they have because you will always be given a very limited exposure to them and their operations.

The other issue is if you are retired you may not want to work full time. The work you are looking for is for spare cash and to fill time and social needs that you used to get by going to work when you worked full time. The advantage is you have time to find what really fits your needs. There are so many ways to choose you should never run out of options.
