This is a membership Morsel from “Too Young to Retire”. Today, we are continuing to
talk about purpose and what we do that gives our lives value or not.
I saw a cartoon called “Pearls Before Swine” by Stephan Pastis. It has several characters in it, one being a pig, another a mouse, and sometimes a wise guru called Great Wise Ass.
The first frame shows pig climbing this high mountain up to the perch of the Great Wise Ass. This is taking place during the Covid lockdown and he states that all he does is sit on his butt watching Netflix. He asks when will they finally return to their normal lives.
The Great Wise Ass looks at him and asks what did you do when life was normal?
Pig in state with pride, “I sat on my ass and watched Netflix!”
The last frame shows pig on the ground talking to his friend the mouse, and he says, “I was told that to miss your life you first have to have one!”
If you had this conversation with the Great Wise Ass or even yourself, would you wonder if your answer was the same one given to pig, and would you be surprised to find out you didn’t have a life?
Purpose is important if you want a life. What you do matters, for good or ill, and only you can make that decision. You don’t want to be on your death bed and wondering if you had done things differently, could you have made the world better in some way?
