This is a membership Morsel from “Too Young to Retire”. Today, we are continuing to
talk about working after your retirement.
Many people find that they want or need a job to keep their sense of purpose. They may also want to keep working after they retire because they want the extra income. [PAR1] I often tell the story of an employee at an Aquatic center I used to go to.
This gentleman was in his mid 80’s and worked as a janitor, opening up at 6:00am in the morning and working till noon 5 days a week. I got talking to him one day and he put his dust mop aside and looked at me, smiled, and started to talk.
You are probably wondering why I am working as a janitor? Well, I don’t need this job, I have a good pension from a company in Cheektowaga. I watched a bunch of my friends retire and they sat on their couch and watched TV and were dead in 3 months.
I decided that wasn’t going to happen to me, so I played golf every day for 6 months. I had to stop after 6 months, I was just beating myself up.
So, I looked for a job that had no responsibility and found this janitor job. I don’t have to be here till 6:00 am, at my old job I had to be there at 5:00 am so I get to sleep in an hour. I am done at noon and play golf 3 days a week and work at the house the other two.
This gives me spare cash to go to Florida for several months every winter. Life is good.
That’s where the conversation ended. He went back to sweeping and I went on to start my workout. He had a clear sense of purpose and what he wanted to do. All of us need a reason to get up every morning and he had his. [PAR2]
