Home Coming and Travel

Net week I will wrap up my entries on getting a knee replaced. It was two weeks since my surgery and I was excited to be going home. The three of us walked out to the car.

The aide put the suitcase in the car and I hopped in the passenger seat with a little effort by myself. Mary Kay was concerned that I would suffer pain if she hit any bumps in the road and surprisingly, I didn’t feel them.

At home my son had taken a long lunch hour in case I needed help getting out of the car and into the house. He was amazed I didn’t. Once in the house, I was exhausted and after a sandwich I slept most of the afternoon.

Saturday all the families and the grand kids who lived in town came over to see me. They also helped me by setting up the patio behind the house. I found it exhausting and took lots of little naps when no one needed my direction.

As a true test of how well I was doing we decided to go to Rochester to visit a new grandchild on Sunday. It’s an hour and a half drive and the question was could I ride that long.

The doctors want me to wear my compression sox’s and get up and walk around every hour to hour and a half. Its pain in the knee, but there is a purpose behind it.

They don’t want me to develop blood clots by sitting in one position too long. Talking to other people, it also helps speed up your recovery. I traveled well. We visited for 2 hours and then headed back home.

I was exhausted and slept for an hour and a half once we got back. Mary Kays daughter and son-in-law had driven there with us, and when we came back we dropped them off at their house. Mary Kay drove from there back to our house.

Their dog Daisy came home with us. I took her out that night in the back yard using my walker. It really doesn’t roll on the grass so I would pick it up, move it, take two steps and repeat the process. The dog slept with us that night and happily it didn’t bother my leg.

Now to develop a new routine around the dog and walker. Come Monday I was trying hard to get back on my routine. I can walk around without the walker except when I do my stretching exercises on my leg, then it feels weak.

I am trying to push hard to get back to full functionality. I have little goals. Not using the walker in a week and switching to a cane. Then dropping the use of a cane and walking unaided.

Then being able to pedal a stationary bike and using the clutch on the Z by week 6 are the next goals. The final goal is to get my knee to bend at 120 degrees in 3 months.

I have an ear that would love to hear your stories. Let’s taste the real meaning of life. I am still working on my course with a goal of launching a starter course by June 30th, and I will keep you abreast as to how the process goes.
