Richard Bode then get very philosophical about where did his boat come from? He concludes that by saying it was made in a ship yard at the end of long island.
This thought wasn’t giving credit to the thousand of years of predecessors that came before his boat and the sailors that sailed them and passed on their knowledge to all the future generations.
He talks about how he is hoping to pass this information on to the next generation. His next lesson is that the shortest distance between to points is not a straight line.
That we will zig and zag like a sailboat must tack to move against the wind. We also zig and zag in our careers even though we have our eyes on a different future than the one we are working at.
Don’t take your eyes off the goal but don’t fight the forces of the wind, go around them, making the most of each leg of our journey. He ends talking about that there are destinations beyond destinations and the good sailor will tack forever.
His next lesson is about momentum and how it is a valued commodity in both sailing and life. It keeps you going long after the wind or your drive has disappeared.
You need momentum to drive you through your transitions between each tack to get toward your goals. He talks specifically about having a job he hated but working it to save the money he needed to accomplish what he wanted to do.
If you don’t have momentum, then you lose control and others will choose your direction and life. In sailing it is called “IN IRONS.” Next, he talks about the most dangerous wind of all.
It is going with the wind and that is the most dangerous wind of all. You get lulled into a false sense of security and you find yourself half asleep. You are no longer the master of your future and if the wind shifts you are unprepared for it.
Isn’t that what a lot like life is like. You drift along without a vision of where you want to go and do not pay attention of how you are getting there. You are fat, dumb and oblivious, and if the environment changes, you will be unprepared to deal with the new environment.
