Richard Bode starts out with getting philosophical and talks about the fact that he started off believing that he had the world under his firm control. It took him time to realize that he wasn’t sovereign over the world any more than the animals in were.
He talks about how he had to first learn how to row a boat. He learned that a lot of life his goals had been an acquired perception and he recognized that this approach had served him well most of the time.
In rowing you only see behind the boat and you had to develop an inner sense of direction to guide you. He realized that this was like life because most of the time you are looking back to figure out where you are going.
He talked about how his dream to sail a particular blue sail boat and his passion to own it, guided his actions in his youth. How having that passion led to circumstances that allowed him to eventually get his first sailboat, which was not the one of his dreams.
Then he was finally able to move on to the boat he really wanted. He talks about how having a dream and hanging to it and following it till you achieve it and even after the boat is physically gone, it is still maintained in your mind forever.
He then talks about what type of life you lead. Do you bend with the wind or do you fight it. It took him a long time in the sailboat to learn to read the wind and use it rather than fight it.
He realizes that it’s the journey itself and how you get there that is more important than the final stopping place. Isn’t that like all our lives, it makes me think of a wisdom saying I once heard.
The Big Panda asked what is more important, the destination or the journey. The Little dragon responded it’s the companionship.
I believe that this is what Richard Bode is also saying when he says it’s the journey itself and how you get there. What is your journey looking like?
