This is a membership Morsel from “Too Young to Retire”. Today, we are continuing to
talk about that forbidden topic, Money.
Did you grow up in a house that never talked about money, and investing and saving money or retirement savings, whether it be a 401K or Roth IRA, or just a savings account. Many people in the past never discussed this subject.
A lot of time the wife may never know what the husband made or how he spent the money. All she would see is the allowance that he would give her each week and it was her responsibility to make the household run on that amount.
My Mom’s method was to have a series of envelops in the dining room sideboard. As kids we were never to be found opening or going into this drawer. She had every envelop labeled and each week she would put aside a little in each one so that come the end of the month she had money for the mortgage and bills.
When she went shopping it was always with coupons and she would go to two or three stores to take advantage of all the sales. We always had a big roast on Sunday. Then we would have sliced roast beef on Monday. Tuesday would be a beef stroganoff or something like that. Wednesday and Thursday would be Mac and Cheese with left over beef cut up into it. Friday’s diner came out of my Dads pocket. My Dad would always go to the fish store and get fried fish and French fries, then Saturday could be a soup with grilled cheese.
We ate well, not lavishly, but well because my Mom planned meals and made money stretch. Are you planning well with your money and not spending all of it on maintaining a lifestyle you can’t afford?
