Today we are continuing our talk on purpose and why it is important. Just remember that there is some leeway in urgency; your time and how you spend it is up to you. You are probably thinking, “isn’t this one of the major areas that Too Young to Retire is highlighting?”
Yes, it is. Yet sometimes you are not ready to decide where or what you have a passion for. Maybe you have too many passions and a million things that you want to do and ask, “how can I choose just one?” That is a good question.
The purpose you have in retirement may look nothing like the purpose that you held tightly when you were younger. With myself, it was to have a family and have my own construction firm. When I retired it was to create a Malting firm. Now I am on my third “Purpose” that I am pursuing.
I would like to say that it is to be a world traveler, an epicurean cook, or some other pursuit. What I found was that these were wonderful things to pursue, but you find that they quickly become hollow. There are only so many things that you can visit before it starts to become old hat. There has to be a purpose to give the trip meaning.
I found that I missed the interaction with other people, the give and take, and the comradery of being part of a community. After I sold my malting firm, I found I needed a new purpose and business.
I have always been interested in the area of Philosophy and have pursued exploring it over the years. While visiting the Chautauqua Institute I attended a course on aging. This is when I became exposed to Too Young To Retire and I had an epiphany on why travel and cooking as pursuits didn’t fill my needs. While the other two offered activities, they didn’t offer anything fulfilling for me.
I have pursued this ever since and found that the community that it offers to all of us is great. There are so many discussions that can be had about the five areas that the program focuses on and exploring these issues never gets old.
This program wants you to live life as you have never lived it before. Live life with gusto and keep pushing forward with your plans on enjoying life.
