Retirement Transition

Updated: Jul 14, 2021

This is a membership Morsel from “Too Young to Retire”. Today’s talk is about Work and it is one of the five areas that “Too Young to Retire” addresses.

Many people look forward to the day that they can retire. They do a lot of things like marking days off on the calendar, or stringing together paper clips, or adding rubber beans to a rubber band ball. The thing that they don’t do is explore what transition they will go through.

When people retire, they will go through several stages. The first is on the day they retire they will experience a feeling of loss. They will experience sadness and maybe even disorientation. There will be some uncertainty but there will also be excitement. It’s the beginning of a new adventure!

What happens next? You will quickly find that the lack of routine affects you greatly. You may also experience a loss of social status; with that, you may also feel that you have a loss of identity. You will find you may miss all the socializing that happened at work, with clients, and with business associations. And there will be relationship stress with your spouse.

A good example is when my father-in-law when he retired was told that his wife had married him for better or worse but not for lunch, and told him to leave the house and go do something.

You will probably find some transition projects and you will need to take some personal inventory of your skills and talents. This will benefit you later and help you better grow into retirement.

Then, if you successfully navigate stage two, you will move into stage three – full retirement. By this time, you should have developed new activities, along with new routines. You hopefully have developed a new sense of self & identity. You will have a new social status and should be developing new friends.

If you think about these changes, you will not muddle through them and you will find that you may really enjoy retirement. We are here to help you live life with gusto and to help you to keep pushing forward with your plans on enjoying life.
