Six week follow up

I have been writing about my knee operation and the experiences I have had since I had my knee replaced on April 24th, 2024. Monday of this week I had my first doctors evaluation since the surgery.

I have been celebrating little achievements. These include being able walk first with out a walker, then with out a cane. Getting in and out of bed by myself, using the toilet with minimal effort.

It still takes effort but not the prodigious amounts it initially took. My last celebration was a week ago. I drove my standard Z3 BMW, which has a clutch. Because it was my left leg I was always pumping the clutch with the new knee.

I though I would have more trouble with it but I didn't so I have now taken it on five local trips to the store. Everyone seems amazed that I am doing this.

The doctor said I am right on schedule and was happy where I am at. They want you to be able to bend your knee 100 deg at six weeks. I got 97 deg which was considered acceptable.

My knee is still swollen and I was told that it will be that way for many months to come. It is going to take a while for my knee to forgive me.

The doctor encouraged me to start practicing going up and down stairs to remember to use hand rails. He also gave me a new exercise, doing a stretch on the stairs by putting my leg with the new knee up on the step and then pushing that into the stair case to stretch it.

I can see where it would give me a better stretch on the knee. Plus I was told to use Hydrocortisone cream on the skin around the wound to soften up the skin in that area and to use a arthritis pain cream around the knee to minimize minor pain around the knee.

My next goals are to be able to walk normally up and down stairs and also sit down and get up from chairs with having to think about it, and the biggie bend my knee 120 degrees. Next one I will talk about the exercises that you need to do to get back on track fast.

I have an ear that would love to hear your stories. Let’s taste the real meaning of life. I am still working on my course with a goal of launching a starter course by June 30th, and I will keep you abreast as to how the process goes. If you want to participate in this process and join my first class please send me an email to www.bobchuckpatterson@yahoo.com
