This is a membership Morsel from “Too Young to Retire”. Today, we are continuing to
talk about what other occupations you can do after you retire.
Many occupations require time to establish your new career. Let’s say you retire and you decide that you would enjoy teaching as your retirement career. You should be thinking of a career that is less physical. Working at a library, driving a car short distances say for a dealership, off track betting clerk, or some other low stress job.
A person might think that the colleges would welcome you with open arms, throw out the red carpet, and tell you to teach whatever you want because your knowledge is so valuable. Remember a school is a business and you can’t teach something if it doesn’t fit the curriculum of the school. They also may be using systems that you have no experience with.
The schools must meet certification standards with the different accreditation agencies. They are also concerned if you know how to teach and can run a classroom, tests, and come up with homework. They are also concerned if your information is current.
As a newbie you would have to learn the new ways of teaching. It’s no longer writing on a slate board up front with a piece of chalk. It may involve using PowerPoint, or other computerized projections.
It’s learning the school’s procedures, and it involves the students rating you and your course work. They would normally start you off with one class to evaluate how you do, then if they are happy with your performance, they will increase your class load.
The other thing that you have to recognize is that you will no longer have the freedom to go away for 3 weeks in the middle of the semester. You have to schedule your vacations at the same time the school has its vacations.
If you are thinking about this route the best strategy would be to teach part time before you retire. This way both you and the school are ready for you to pursue your new career.
