Table Money

This is a membership Morsel from “Too Young to Retire”. Today, we are continuing to

talk about attitudes toward money that people have.

In the good old days, what no one talked about is the attitude that many working people had toward money. They worked hard and earned a fair wage, but many had no training on how to handle money.

In Buffalo, a play writer wrote a play called Table Money and it was based on where people would spend their money. Many employers at the time would not pay their employees till after lunch.

The employees would head to the bars at the end of work and have their checks cashed. Then they would proceed to drink most of the money that they got from their check.

When they came home late that night, they would empty their pockets on the table and what was left the wife would have to stretch to pay the bills and buy their food. It was a habit at that time that the husband always ate first and got the best cut of the meat. The children and wife would get the soups and goulashes.

When I first started working, I was only paid once a month. That meant that when I deposited my check, I had to pay the rent, gas and electric, and any other things like insurance; those checks were written and paid first.

Then what was leftover I would try to split into four or five amounts as to what I could spend each week. If I wanted to do something special, I might have to dip into the next weeks cash allowance. Which meant that by the end of the month I was eating baked beans and maybe hot dogs rather than a good steak.

How do you manage your money? Do you spend it all when it first arrives and then try to figure out how to pay the bills and save for retirement? By being part of the 2 Young 2 Retire you will learn what strategies you can use to live well and save for the future.

There are so many things you will learn that you will never run out of options. Sign up for our classes, join in the discussion and become part of our community about life after working at www.patterson2y2r.com
