The Best Traveler

A great highway had been built that connected one end of the Kings empire to the other end of the empire. It traversed streams and rivers, gorges and mountain passes and made travel less difficult.

The King decided that he wanted to celebrate this great feat and offered a title with land to whoever traveled the highway best. He set a day when he would receive everyone who came.

The kingdom was all excited and everyone wondered how to travel this highway the best way. The rich had their carriages cleaned and repainted, gold gilt and polished steel.

The merchants cleaned their wagons, had new shelves installed so they could display their wares for all to see. The axles were greased, and the horses all had new shoes.

All the ladies pulled out their best dresses, adding lace and frills. Each trying to out do the others. Their hair was done up by some, and hats made for others.

Even the ordinary men and women were excited about this event. All of them polished their shoes, cleaned their pants, shirts and dresses, ironing them and mending all the holes.

The great day came and those at the far end of the kingdom started first. As they travelled thru the day the parade grew and conversation became excited as the castle came in site.

Even the officers of the realm joined in the parade with polished saddles and bridle Decorations, swords and pompoms on the horses. When they reached the final bridge there was a pile of rocks across the road.

It was such that the horses and carriages could not pass. So everybody started to climb over them and walk the last mile to the castle. There was a half dozen of the travelers who stopped and worked at helping everyone over the road block.

It was late evening by the time the last travelers made it pasted the barrier. The men who had been helping everyone saw that their good cloths were torn and dirty. They all decided it would still be fun to see who won.

When they arrived the guards immediately surrounded them and took them in front of the king. The king looked them up and down finally saying you look terrible, explain yourselves.

They apprehensively explained what they had done. When they finished the King smiled, went down and hugged everyone then held up their hands. He said you all look fabulous in your best cloths but these men cared more about helping others then winning a prize.

I declare that they traveled the road the best. It is time to feast and celebrate what they have done. How do you plan to travel the last third of your life? Is it with glitter to impress those around you or will you help others traverse the barriers that are in front of them.
