My blog focuses on making the most of the 3rd part of your life. The only way to accomplish this is to have a definite vision and mission about what you want to accomplish in the future based on what values you hold most dear.
I saw a movie and then bought the book “The Boys in the Boat” by Daniel James Brown. What a great story about 9 young men overcoming the struggle and hardship, in order to achieve not one but several dreams.
It was about how they all had a shared a vision to graduate from college with a degree and rowing became the vehicle to accomplish it. This was an excellent read.
It details the problems a lot of people had with finances, and family issues caused by the depression. These young men didn't have the skills originally to become great rowers.
They did have a burning desire to find a way to get into college and stay there. Back then they didn't have traditional scholarships, but these boys discovered that the college would pay them and provide room and board for them if they rowed for the college.
It detailed the struggles each of them had over the couple of years that the story covered. What conditions they trained under, their struggles with juggling classes and what they had to do to earn extra money in the summer to pay the tuition to stay in school.
It had a third story buried in the book about the coach and his struggles with working to produce the best boat of rowers from the West Coast. Despite all the odds against this coach and these nine young men, they not only won the West Coast title, they won the US title and then they went on to win the Summer Olympics in Germany.
It is well worth while going to see the movie or reading the book. I enjoyed both. Do you have such passion in all that you do? If people looked at you they would say there is someone I want to emulate?
