This is a membership Morsel from “Too Young to Retire”. Today, we are continuing to
talk about work and whether it is work or not. It’s all a matter of how you look at it.
When I was in college, a group of us went to Florida over Easter Vacation on our senior year. We had planned on spending two weeks to drive down there and enjoy the sun.
At the end of the first week, we decided to go to Key West and drove down there setting up at a camp site off the water. We explored the Key and the next day decided to go deep sea fishing.
We found a charter boat that took 25 people at a time out to fish. They had four hands plus the captain working the boat helping us with lines and netting fish that we reeled in. By noon the sea started to get very choppy, and a couple of the passengers got seasick.
The headed back to the dock which took about an hour and a half. Once there one of the deck hands after helping people off the boat set up a cleaning station and for an extra fee he would scale and filet our catches.
I noticed that his lunch cooler said Barrie, Canada on it. I asked him if had visited there and he told me that he lived there most of the year but in the winter, came to Florida. He said he loved fishing and by working on the charter he got to fish for free. He got to keep the unclaimed fish, and he got paid.
He felt that this was a win, win, win situation for him and best of all he fished all winter long. Then up to Georgian Bay in the summers to fish there. He was enjoying his retirement and wouldn’t change anything.
