Work Applications

Updated: Jul 14, 2021

This is a membership Morsel from “Too Young to Retire”. Today, we are continuing to talk about how the work application process has change in 30 years.

In the good old days, your resume was supposed to separate you from the other candidates. You listed all your skills and the jobs you had held. The employer would call your previous employer and confirm that the jobs you held indeed where similar to what they needed.

Then came the lawyers and the politicians. It got so that if an employer said anything bad about you, they would now be sued for defamation. Even if it was only something like you never showed up on time, were sloppy about the tasks you did or some other thing that made you work performance unacceptable.

The only way you could judge them was by their cover letter. Had they researched your company, were they articulate, concise, and clear. If it was an hourly position on the factory floor, a mistake in hiring was easily addressed. If it was a salaried position, it was much harder to deal with. Most people were hired with a 6-month probation.

Now, when you apply online you get things like a test by Pymetrics. You have seven or eight 8 tests to fill out on line. One is a timed and you fill a column by tapping the space bar; another is selecting red and green circles as they flash by; a third is picking the numbered squares; then a value test with virtual money for certain cards appearing from different decks; next choosing a red arrows direction among green arrows; then recognizing the length of mouth on face choosing if it is long or small; next moving disks between three poles to place in a specific order with the fewest moves. Last, they show you a real face to face and ask you what the people are feeling with and without a descriptive paragraph.

Wow, this was such a different a test to see if they even wanted to interview you. If you are color blind you are up the creek.
