Working during Retirement

Updated: Jul 14, 2021

This is a membership Morsel from “Too Young to Retire”. Today we are continuing to talk about Work and retirement.

Many people after they retire will find that they need the structure of going to work. They find it gives them purpose, and fulfils socialization needs. People who have been very successful during their career also find that they can’t achieve the same success in the same field that they did prior.

Many of the more successful retirees find that they have to redefine their goals and options of what they what to do. Some of the great composers flipped their careers from writing to teaching music. A lot of people in the medical profession have flipped their careers from running a practice to volunteering on medical missionary missions.

A couple of people I know who worked on the factory floor, went on to working a nonprofits to keep themselves involved in the workplace. One person did cooking demonstrations using a Dutch oven at Boy Scout events. A second person I know loved the Buffalo Zoo and became a docent during the week as his retirement job.

There was a third who retired from a good company, decided he would play golf every day in his retirement. After six months he said he had to cut way back he was just beating himself up. He look for a new job, found one at the Aquatic center in town and was real happy with it. As he put it, I have no responsibility, I don’t have to be here till six in the morning so I get to sleep in an hour from what I was used to. I am done at noon, golf 3 days a week, do something around the house the other days, and have extra money when we go to Florida in the winter. Life is good.

Some other people I know who are engineers and attorneys have no intention of ever retiring, much to their spouses chagrin. There are so many ways to choose you should never run out of options. Next time I will talk about the new way that employers look for employees. I have gone on line to look for jobs and will relate my experiences.
