This is a membership Morsel from Too Young To Retire. Today’s talk is about work and it is one of the five areas that Too Young to Retire addresses.
At Too Young to Retire, we put a lot of focus on purpose, or more succinctly why you get up every morning. Too Young to Retire is not the only group that thinks Purpose is important, so do people like Napoleon Hill. He made it the first statement in his laws of Success.
The purpose you have in retirement may look nothing like the purpose that you held tightly when you were younger. With myself it was to have a family and have my own construction firm. When I retired it was to create a Malting firm. Now I am on my third “Purpose” that I am pursuing.
I would like to say that it is to be a world traveler, an epicurean cook, or some other pursuit. What I found was that these where wonderful things to pursue, but you find that they quickly become hollow. There are only so many things that you can visit before it starts to become old hat. There has to be a purpose to give the trip meaning.
I found that I missed the interaction with other people, the give and take, and the comradery of being part of a community. After I sold my malting firm, I found I needed a new purpose and business.
I have always been interested in the area of Philosophy and have pursued exploring it over the years. While visiting the Chautauqua Institute I attended a course on aging. This is when I became exposed to Too Young To Retire and I had an epiphany on why travel and cooking as pursuits didn’t fill my needs. While the other two offered activities, they didn’t offer anything fulfilling for me.
I have pursued this ever since and found that the community that it offers to all of us is great. There are so many discussions that can be had about the five areas that the program focuses on and exploring these issues never get old.
This program wants you to live life like you have never lived it before. Live life with gusto and keep pushing forward with your plans on enjoying life.
